Mita Vashisht Biography

Mita Vashisht is a noted film, theatre and television actress who works in Bollywood as well as Marathi cinema. She has worked both in mainstream and parallel cinema and known for character and supporting roles, though she has played a few leading roles as well. Currently she appears in the series, Suvreen Guggal, which airs on Channel V India. She is a graduate from prestigious NSD and has been active in Indian television since 1980’s. She teaches at several prestigious acting schools and conducts theater workshops too. Fashion design, film direction and acting are her regular subjects as a faculty.

Mita was born on November 2, 1967 in Pune, Maharashtra. Her parents are Rajeshwar Dutt Vasisht, a retired Colonel in the Indian Army and Meenakshi Mehta Vasisht, a teacher and musician. After completion of post-graduation in literature from Punjab University, Chandigarh, she joined NSD to pursue a career in acting. Later she worked as visiting faculty for various subjects at NIFT (Delhi), FTII (Pune), NSD (Delhi) and the NID (Ahmedabad). She has also conducted theatre workshops in the UK and Damascus.

As an actress, she has worked in both parallel and commercial movies. She played lead role in 1992 Shah Rukh Khan movie – Idiot, which received Filmfare best movie award. She played the role of a terrorist in 1998 Mani Ratnam movie, Dil Se.. She played the lead role of a frustrated housewife who gets less care from her busy husband, in 2004 Bollywood movie, Oops. Chandini, Antaheen, Anubhav, Taal, Snegithiye (Tamil), Ghulam, Aladdin, Pitah and Drohkaal are her other noted releases. She has also produced television programs and documentaries. ‘Lal Ded’ is one of her noted plays as a theater artist.
