Mira Nair Biography

Mira Nair is an Indian film maker whose films have great impact on Indian society as well as abroad. Her debut feature film, Salaam Bombay! (1988) is regarded as one of the milestones of Indian cinema. The debut movie itself placed her among the genius film makers of the industry. This film won Golden Camera award at the Cannes Film Festival and also earned the nomination for Academy Award (Oscar award) for Best Foreign Language Film, after Mother India, only the second Indian film to get this credit. Her production company is Mirabai Films and this film maker is at present at New York. She has won numerous awards and nominations at Film fare, National awards as well as many international film festivals.

 
Mira was born on 15 October 1957 in Rourkela, Odisha. Her career started with 4 documentary films - Jama Street Masjid Journal (1979), So Far From India (1982), India Cabaret (1985) and Children Of A Desired Sex (1987). Indian Cabaret won the Blue Ribbon award at the 1986 American Film Festival. This documentary film showed on screen the real life of night clubs in Mumbai. It also received Golden Athena awards at Athens International Film Festival and Best Documentary Film at Global Village Film Festival. Then she directed Salaam Bombay, based on the children living in the outskirts of Mumbai. This movie is used as best reference by students who study cinema.


In 1991, she directed Mississippi Masala – the movie based on interracial romance between African Americans and Indian Americans in the United States. After a couple of movies, The Day the Mercedes Became a Hat (1993) and The Perez Family (1995), the controversial movie, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love was released in the year 1996. In this movie, Bollywood actress Rekha played a pivot role. Other movies of Mira Nair are My Own Country (1998), Monsoon Wedding (2001), Hysterical Blindness (2002), Vanity Fair (2004) and The Namesake (2006).
