Mir Ranjan Negi Biography

Mir Ranjan Negi is a former Indian hockey player and goal keeper. The sports movie, Chak de India starring Shah Rukh Khan and a team of girls was inspired from Mir’s sports career, though it’s not a documentary of Mir Ranjan Negi's life. He was also involved in the development of the film script. He was the goalkeeper of the national squad till 1982 when India lost to Pakistan in 1982 Asian Games hockey final by a big margin of 6 goals (7-1). In 2002 he trained women’s hockey team to win Gold at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. He also served as the goalkeeping coach of Indian hockey team for the 1998 Asian Games and assistant coach of winning women team of 2004 Hockey Asia Cup. Negi, also participated in Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa 2 though he didn’t participate to the final round. He was born in Almora of Uttarakhand.

He received so much humiliation after 1982 Asiad Final and was solely blamed for the loss of the game. He was also accused of taking 1 lakh each for each goal from Pakistan to concede goals. Though the rest of the team moved away with their lives, Mir got shattered. Some even enquired if Mir, his first name is a Muslim name. He quit the game for many years and returned only in late 1990s as a coach. He returned as a goalkeeping coach for the 1998 Asian Games, which won Gold at Bangkok, Thailand. The real highlight of his career was 2002 Commonwealth Games, when he coached women’s hockey team to win Gold.

After India’s win at Asiad in 1998, his joy was short-lived as the ungrateful federation sacked Negi. But he returned to coach Indian girls, following MK Kaushik’s sex scandal and his resignation. Negi came in limelight after the success of ‘Chak de India’.
