Minati Mishra Biography

Minati Mishra is a well-known Odissi dancer and actress, and a recipient of Padma Shri given by government of India, in recognition for the efforts towards the fields of arts and dance forms. She is reported to be the oldest living Odissi performer. This living legend was born in the year 1929. She is also a recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademy. Minati Mishra has acted in five Odia movies since 1960s. She has also been an A Grade artist at the All India Radio and is a recipient of Sangeet Prabhakar title for Hindustani vocal music. She served as the principal of Utkal Sangeet Mohavidyalaya, Bhubaneswar for long 25 years since 1964. She took retirement from her dance performances after the death of her husband Nityananda Mishra in 1980, yet continued with teaching and organizing events.

 

Mishra was born in Cuttack, Odisha in the year 1929. Her father Basanta Kumar Das was a school headmaster. She has two elder siblings. She started learning dance and music at an early age, and carried them together for a long time. Later she concentrated more towards dance career. She has also worked in movies. Ajit Ghosh and Banabihari Maity were her first gurus in Hindustani music and Kabichandra Kalicharan Patnayak in Odia dance form. Later she got opportunity to learn under the legendary Kelucharan Mahapatra, which helped her a lot in her successful journey as a dancer. She learnt Bharathnatyam from Kalakshetra of Rukmini Devi Arundale, on a scholarship from the Government of Odisha.

 

She also studied at Indian Institute of Free Arts, before beginning her career as a performer in 1956. After performing in all major cities of India in the next three years she performed outside for the first time in Switzerland. As a film actress, she debuted with Suryamukhi in 1963, followed by four more movies, Jeevan Sathi, Sadhana, Bhai Bhauja and Arundhati. She also acted in a 1963 Bengali movie, Nirjana Saikate.
