Mercy Kuttan Biography

Mercy Kuttan is a former Indian track and field athlete from Kerala. She was the first Indian woman long jumper to cross six meters. She is also the first woman from Kerala to win a medal in the Asian Track and Field meet. Her first international success came in 1981 Asian Championships in Athletics. She won the double Bronze in long jump and 4 x 400 metres relay. In 1989, she received Arjuna Award for her contributions to Indian athletics. Along with her husband, she has opened a sports academy at Kochi with the name ‘Mercy Kuttan Sports Academy’ in 2009.

 

She also holds a few distinctions in Indian Athletics. She is the first Indian Woman Athlete to win medals at National and International level in both Track and Field events. She was the first Woman from India to participate in the Commonwealth Games. She has been National School Record holder for 19 years and National University Record holder for 27 years. She was the National Record holder in Long Jump from 1980 – 87. She was the First Woman from India to Participate in World Athletic Championship, where she was the captain of Indian team also.

 

Her first big success for team India happened in 1981 Asian Championships in Athletics when she won the double Bronze in long jump and 4 x 400 metres relay. At 1982 Asian Games she won a Silver medal in long jump. Her career best in long jump is 6.29 m. To the end of her career she concentrated on sprint and started competing in 400 metres. At 1988 Seoul Olympics she managed to reach the second round. She is married to Murali Kuttan, a former 400 metres National champion and this couple has two sons.
