Mehnaz Hoosein Biography

Mehnaz Hoosein is a successful Indian pop singer and lyricist. 'Banoongi Main Miss India' is her most popular pop song which gave her 1996 Channel V Music Award for Best Female Pop Vocalist. It was during the era when Indi pop started emerging in the music industry. Miss India was her debut album, followed by Mausam (1999), Sajnaa (2006), Hi (2009) and Silence (2011). Her soundtracks are included in Bombay Boys (1998 - 'Paisa paisa paisa' song), Split Wide Open (1999 - "You Are The Reason") and Snip (2000 - 'Dreamcatcher').

 

She was born in Mumbai on January 30, 1973. She started formal training in Hindustani music at the age of 13 under Pandit Bhavdeep Jaipurwale. She graduated from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. Later she joined Shiamak Davar’s dance troupe and performed with the Shiamak Davar Institute of Performing Arts till 1995. In the year 1996, her debut album was released which was an instant hit. It was a time soon after the crowning of Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai and the song clicked. She won Channel V Music Award for Best Female Pop Vocalist. Her song 'Main Hoon' from the album Miss India was featured on the soundtrack of Deepa Mehta's movie 'Fire'.

 

In 1997 she was featured in 'Wajah Muskurane Ki' (A Reason to Smile), during the occasion of 50th Independence Day celebrations. Mehnaz recorded a duet titled "Senada Cinta" with Malaysia's recording artist Iwan in 1998. Mehnaz was a judge on Channel V's, Coke V Popstars 2 in 2003. Her solo album, Sanjana was released in the year 2006. She is also known for her collaborations with local musicians of US and a lead singer of Seattle-based band, Manooghi Hi.
