Mehmood Biography

Mehmood is considered as the most versatile comedian of 1960’s and early 70’s, after Johny walker. Apart from being a good comedian he has directed a few movies too. He has contributed a lot to the initial career of Amitabh Bachchan by offering him the role of leading hero in his directorial venture ‘Bombay to Goa’.

As an actor during early career, he has played less significant roles in critically well acclaimed movies like Pyaasa, Do Bheega Zameen and CID. But his decision to do comic roles provided him the best path towards a successful Bollywood journey. The movie was ‘Bhoot Bungla’, directed by himself. Among all his roles, his role as a Tamil Brahmin classical singer in Padosan is remembered most. This movie is considered as a trend settler to comic movies and Tamil characters in Bollywood. Many comedians have tried to follow the steps of Mehmood in many comic movies as Tamilian, yet no one has been able to succeed the same way Mehboob has done for Padosan. Till now, Padosan is considered as one among the best classic comedies of Bollywood.

His other movies include Gumnaam, Love in Tokyo, Pyar kiya jaa, Dil tera diwana, Do Kaliyan, Chitra Lekha, Shabnam, pathar ke sanam, Waris, Paras, Johan Mehmood in Bombay, Sabse bada rupaiya, Manzil, Chote Nawab, Kuwara baap, Des pardes, Sangursh, Humjoli, Vardaan, Neel Kamal and Mein sundar hoon. In the movie, Kuwara Baap he was the leading hero and in the suspense thriller ‘Gumnaam’ his role as a servant played a significant role in the success of the movie. The song ‘Khayaalom mein’ sung by Rafi pictured on Mehmood is still popular among the music lovers. Another song that has been very popular that time was ‘Jogi jogi mein tere jogi’.

He has won Filmfare supporting actor award once for his performance in Dil tera diwana in 1963. He has won best comedian award 4 times and has been nominated 19 times. As a director his movies include Bombay to Goa, Bhoot bangla and Kuwara baap. In his movie, Ek Baap Cheh Bete, all his 6 sons acted together. Among his sons, Lucky Ali is a popular singer of present times who has contributed a lot of pop albums as well as film songs.
