Mehbooba Mufti Biography

Mehbooba Mufti Sayeed (born 22 May 1959) is the current Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, serving since 4 April 2016. Mehbooba Mufti is a famous politician from Kashmir. She is the daughter of former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mufti Mohmmad Sayeed. Currently she serves as the president of the Jammu and Kashmir people Democratic Party. She is one of the few female politicians of Jammu and Kashmir who is recognised all over the India. Earlier she has been a member of Indian National Congress party and has served as the leader of opposition in 1996. She formed Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party in 1999, following her split with Indian National Congress the same year.

She was born on 22 May 1959 in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir. Her father was an active congress politician. She completed Bachelor of Law from the University of Kashmir, Kashmir. Then she got married and became mother of two daughters and was a normal housewife during 1980’s. She entered active politics after her divorce and joined Indian National Congress. She became a prominent leader in the 1990’s and contested for the first time in the state assembly election held in 1996. She was elected from Bijbehara on an Indian National Congress ticket. Her father was also active in politics at that time, who has just returned back to the congress party after his split in 1987. She became the leader of opposition party. The government was then ruled by the prominent leader Farooq Abdullah.

But very soon in 1999, she spilt with Congress to form Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party in 1999. She became its Vice-president against the popular belief of becoming its president. She was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2004 and a prominent member of Congress-Party led coalition right now.
