Maya Govind Biography

Maya Govind is a lady lyricist associated with Hindi cinema. Apart from a lyricist in Bollywood industry, she is also known as a poet, stage artist, playback singer and producer in Bollywood. She is married to Ram Govind, a writer and actor, known for Patton Ki Bazi (1986), Tohfa Mohabbat Ka (1988) and Baghban (2003). She has worked as a teacher and with All India Radio. She moved to Mumbai in 1974 to write songs for the film “Aarop”. She penned lyrics for “Naino Mein Darpan Hai” and “Jab Se Tumne” which got noticed. She has been not regular in Bollywood as a lyricist, and got only fewer opportunities. Yet she gave some beautiful songs in the 1970s and later.

Maya Govind hails from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. She got married to Ram Govind, a writer and actor associated with Bollywood. Started her career as a lyricist in 1974, she was most active in the era of 1980s. Bhupen Hazarika composed the music for her debut work, Aarop. She penned lyrics for Aarop, Jhootti, Imandhar, Dulhan Ko Dulha Pyara Lage and many more hits in the 1970s and 1980s.

In the 1990s, she penned some chartbuster hits. In fact her major hits came in this era. Na Unees Se Kam Ho and Gutur Gutur from Dalaal, Darwaza Khula Chhod Aayi from Najaayaz and Ankhon Mein Base Ho Tum from Takkar were her big hits of the era. She penned the lyrics - Lounda Badnaam Hua of Disco Dancer (1995), an inspired version of a Pakistani song, which later inspired many songs like Munni Badnaam Hui.

“Sun Sun Goria” from “Daman” (2001) and “Gale Mein Laal Taai” from “Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam” (2002) are her noted works in the 2000s. She has also sung a few soft songs in Bollywood, mostly in the era of 1980s. Mandir Mein Bhagwan Rahte Hain Ghar Mein Hamari Maa from Mere Baad is one such. She penned its lyrics and music was composed by Usha Khanna.
