Mathukumalli V. Subbarao Biography

Mathukumalli V. Subbarao was an Indo-Canadian mathematician, specialising in number theory. He was of Indian origin, born in Yazali, Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh. He resided at Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He was a noted author, who collaborated with more than 40 authors to publish books related to Mathematics. He lived during the period, May 4, 1921 – February 15, 2006. Noted mathematician Mathukumalli Vidyasagar is his son. Professor R Vaidyanatha Swamy was his Doctoral advisor for completing his PhD, while he also learnt mathematics under Professor K. Ananda Rau.

Subbarao was born in a small village Yazali, Guntur district, of present day Andhra Pradesh on 4 May 1921. He completed his master's degree from Presidency College, Madras in 1941. It was followed by his doctorate in functional analysis, under the guidance of Professor R Vaidyanatha Swamy. Then for nearly 2 decades he worked as a professor in different universities of India, before he moved to Canada and got settled. He taught at University of Alberta since 1963 till his retirement. He also continued with his research works and published many books. He died on 15 February 2006 at Edmonton, Alberta, aged 84.

Subbarao began to study the congruence properties of the partition function in the 1960s. It was his main area of interest. Subbarao co-authored a book on partition theory with A.K. Agarwal and Padmavathamma, towards the end of his life. Thus, Subbarao's conjectures generated fundamental research activity for years to come. He also researched special classes of divisors, divisor functions and perfect numbers, exponential divisors and subjects related to it. He was fully active with his research works till his death at 84 years.
