Markandey Katju Biography

Markandey Katju is a Juristic and the former Chairman, Press Council of India. He earlier served as a Judge at the Supreme Court of India. Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, Madras High Court and as acting Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court are other major juristic posts held by him, before being appointed as the Judge at the Supreme Court of India. He has written several books, and published many articles as well, belonging to non-fiction genre. He also invited many controversies throughout his public life. His family is related to law and politics. He is the son of Shiva Nath Katju, a lawyer, judge and an Indian National Congress politician from Uttar Pradesh.

 

Katju was born into a family of jurists, with strong links to politics. His father Shiva Nath Katju was a famous lawyer who served as judge at Allahabad high court and politician associated with Congress. Katju was born on 20 September 1946 in Lucknow, United Provinces in British India. Tilottama Mukherji Tharoor, first wife of Shashi Tharoor, is a cousin to Katju. Katju is married to Rupa and the couple has two kids. He topped the merit list of the Allahabad University's LL.B. examination in 1967. Doctorate of Law from Amity University and Honoris Causa a Doctor of Philosophy from Lal Bahadur Shastri Sanskrit University are major honours received by him.

 

Stepping into father’s shoes, Markandey Katju started his law practice at the Allahabad High Court in the year 1970. He was elevated to the Bench of Allahabad High Court in 1991, and from there on, he rose to many prominent positions related to law and order. For his straight statements and reviews, he has always caught media eyes and faced open criticisms too, whether it’s his statement on anti Odia remark on facebook page in 2016, or his comment about Salman Rushdie and others. When the accused Govindachamy was not given death penalty in Soumya rape-murder case, he criticized the judgment which prompted Supreme Court to ask him explanation.
