Mansukhlal Jhaveri Biography

Mansukhlal Jhaveri was an Indian writer belonging to Gujarati literature. He was a poet, critic and historian who lived in the 20th century. History of Gujarati Literature (1978) is his celebrated work. He lived during the period, 3 October 1907 - 27 August 1981, and died at the age of 73. He published his first poetry collection in 1929, Chandradut, which is an adaptation of Sanskrit classical work, Meghaduta. Since then he has been fully active in his writing career till his death. He was deeply interested in classical Sanskrit poetry, and translated a few works to Gujarati.

 

Mansukhlal Jhaveri was born on 3 October 1907 in Jamnagar, Gujarat. His childhood days were spent in his hometown where he completed his studies till matriculation. Later he completed his graduation and Master’s degree from Bhavnagar. After studies he began his professional career as a lecturer in 1940 and taught at different colleges till his retirement. Raiya College in Mumbai, Dharmendrasinhji College in Rajkot, St. Xavier's College in Mumbai, Madhwani Arts and Commerce College, Porbandar and BEC College, Kolkata were the colleges in which he taught and he served as the principal of later two. Hasmukhgauri was his wife and he had 5 children.

 

He got associated with writing since 1920s, and used a series of pennames such as Devaki Ayodhya, Punarvasu, Madilant, Samintiyajak, and Siddhartha. He was a writer as well as critic, and a translator of Sanskrit works too. Phooldol (1933), Aaradhana (1939), Abhisar (1947), Anubhuti (1956) and Doomo Ogalyo (1975) are among his published poetry works. He wrote History of Gujarati Literature in English, which is one among his major works. He published Bhasha Parichay in four volumes in the 1950s.
