Manorama Biography

Manorama is a Tamil actress and has acted in more than 1500 films and few television serials. She was born on 26th May 1943 at Mannargudi, Tiruvarur District of Tamil Nadu. Her birth name was Gopishantha. She is affectionately called as Aachi. She has the Guinness World Record for acting in most number of films in the world.

 

Her parents are Kasi Clockudiayar and Ramamirtham. Though she was born in Mannargudi, due to poverty her family moved to Pallathur near Karaikudi. She started her acting career when she was 12 and took part in many stage performances. She was named as Manorama by Thiruvengadam, the drama director and Thiyagaran, the harmonist. She acted in many plays and was also a playback singer.

 

She established her role of comedian in the silver screen through the Tamil film Malayitta Mangai. She was seen alongside the comedian Nagesh in many films. The first song that she sang in cinema was for the film Magale Un Samathu. The song started with the verse, "Thaatha thaatha pidi kudu... Indha thalladha vayasila sadugudu...". Her first hit song was for the film Bommalattam which was Vaa vaathiyaare uttande..”. She was praised for her role in the film Thillana Mohanambal. Cho Ramaswamy said that he called Manorama as the female Sivaji Ganesan and admired her versatility in acting.

 

The first film that she acted was a Sinhalese film. The first film in which she acted as a heroine was Konjum Kumari in 1963. Some of the films that she acted are Kalathur Kannamma, Par Magale Paar, Thiruvilayadal, Pattikaada Pattanama, Badrakaali, Mayor Meenakshi, Kaadhalan, Naattamai, Gemini, Saamy, Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam, Laadam, Seetha Kalyanam, Paasa Kiligal. Imsai Arasan, 23m Pulikesi, etc.

 

She acted with five chief ministers of South India. She acted in stage plays written my C. N. Annadurai, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and M. Karunanidhi, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. She also acted in films with D. G. Ramachandran and Jayalalitha who became Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and N. T. Rama Rao, who became Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. She won National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for the film Puthiya Paathai in 1989. She received Kalaimamani Award by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

 

She died in Chennai at on 10 October 2015 as a result of multiple organ failure. She was 78 and is survived by her son and singer-actor Bhoopathy.
