Manoj Kumar Actor Biography

Manoj Kumar is known for his patriotic movies of 1960’s and 1970’s. He is a successful director as well as a glamorous hero. His real name was Harikishan Giri Goswami and as he was a great fan of Dilip kumar, he renamed himself as Manoj Kumar.  He is also known as ‘Bharat’ or ‘Bharat kumar’ as he has acted a lot of patriotic films and used screen mane Bharat for most of his movies.

He debut Bollywood through a less-significant role in 1975 movie Fashion. But he got the role of a hero in Kaanch ki gudia. After a couple of movies he was casted opposite Mala Sinha in Hariyali aur rastha with memorable songs. In 1964, the suspense thriller Woh kaun thi opposite Sadhana was released. This movie is remembered most for its Madan Mohan tunes like lag ja gale and nayana barse beautifully pictured on Sadhana and Manoj Kumar. The director of the movie Raj Khosla gave him a couple of movies again seeing the success of Woh kaun thi. Do Badan and Himalay ki Gode mein proved milestones in the career of Manoj Kumar.

But in 1965 movie, Shaheed, he portrayed the role of Bhagath Singh and thus begun the series of patriotic movies. When Lal Bahadur Shastri impressed by his performance in Shaheed asked him to direct a patriot movie, it gave ‘Upkar’ – one among the best patriotic movies ever made on Bollywood screen. It gave first Filmfare to Manoj Kumar for his direction. ‘Mere desh ki darthi’ was quite popular that time.

Manoj kumar got attracted to patriotic themes and he directed the next patriotic movie – Purab aur paschim. This movie showed the positive features of our country in different angles and its dialogues and songs are still famous. Saira Banu did a wonderful role in this movie as a foreign lady, yet with an Indian mind. Veteran actor Ashok Kumar did a memorable role in this movie. His social movie Roti Kapada aur makan, Be-Imaan, Shor, Dus Numberi, Sanyasi and Kranti are other land mark movies of Manoj Kumar. He is a versatile personality who has won awards in Filmfare for acting, direction, dialogues as well as story. Most recently he was in news for filing suit against Shah Rukh Khan, for reproducing him as a comic actor in the movie Om Shanthi Om.
