Manohar Joshi Biography

Manohar Joshi is a prominent political leader from Maharashtra who served as the 12th Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He served as CM during the period, 1995-1999. One of the prominent leaders of the Shiv Sena political party he also served as 13th Speaker of the Lok Sabha (2002-2004). He is the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Maharashtra, and he formed government in coalition with Bharatiya Janata Party. During his tenure as Chief Minister he got involved in a scam involving the change of reservation of a plot of land in Pune and following the pressure from opposition he resigned as CM. In 2006 he joined Rajya Sabha, where he served a term of 6 years.

 

He was born on 2 December 1937 in Raigad district of Maharashtra. His ancestors originally belong to Beed district. He married Anagha Joshi in 1964 and had three children. He completed Master’s and started his career as an officer at BMC. But later he started a technical institute – Kohinoor to train students in electrical works and photography. As a businessman he became successful and very soon opened many branches of Kohinoor in different cities of Maharashtra. He also diversified into construction and capital-oriented businesses too, and started Kohinoor Business School & Kohinoor-IMI School of Hospitality Management in Khandala.

 

He started his political career with Shiv Sena in the 1970s. He was a member of Legislative Council for three terms in the 1970s and 1980s and also served as Mayor of Mumbai during 1976 – 1977. He got elected to state assembly for the first time in 1990. Since then he has been a prominent leader of Shiv Sena party. In 2010 he was honoured with an honorary doctorate by Mumbai University.
