Manna Dey Biography

Manna Dey is the nickname of Prabodh Chandra Dey, an Indian playback singer who performed in Bengali, Assamese and Hindi films. He was famous in the North Indian music industry from 1950 to 1970s. In his career he has recorded over 3500 songs. He received Padma Shri award in the year 1971, Padma Bhushan award in the year 2005 and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in the year 2009.

He was born on 1st May 1919 in Calcutta in British India. His parents are Purna Chandra and Mahamaya Dey. He was inspired by his paternal uncle Sangeetacharya K. C. Dey. He started his education in a small school named Indu Babur Pathshala. Then he studied at Scottish Church Collegiate School and Scottish Church College and then in Vidhyasagar College. He sang to entertain his classmates during his college days.

He took his singing lessons from Ustad Dabir Khan and his uncle Krishna Chandra Dey. He came to Mumbai and started working under Krishna Chandra Dey and then under Sachin Dev Burman. He started his career as a playback singer from the film Tamanna in the year 1943. He recorded the popular duet Ketaki Gulab Juhi with Bhimsen Joshi. With Lata Mangeshkar he sang a duet in the film Sankhyabela, Ke Prothom Kachhe Esechi.

He married Sulochana Kumaran of Kerala on 18th December 1953 and has two daughters Shuroma and Sumita. Manna Dey is at present living in Kalyannagar area of Bangalore after spending more than five decades in Mumbai. Jiboner Jalsaghorey is his Bengali language autography and this was translated into many languages. A documentary film on his life was released in 2008.

He has received National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer twice in 1969 and 1971, Lata Mangeshkar Award by Government of Madhya Pradesh in 1985, National Award as Playback singer by Government of Kerala in 2004, Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011 and many other awards and honors.
