Manmohan Mahapatra Biography

Manmohan Mahapatra is one of the most versatile film makers of Oriya cinema, an indispensible part of Oriya parallel cinema. He has won best regional film at National awards 8 times! It’s indeed a unique record of Ollywood. He completely dominated Oriya film industry during 1980’s and during the period 1981 to 1989, he has missed only 2!

 

He won National award for best Oriya films for - Seeta Raati (1981), Neeraba Jhada (1983), Klanta Aparahna (1984), Majhi Pahacha (1986), Nishidhdha Swapna (1987), Kichi Smruti Kichi Anubhuti (1988) and Andha Diganta (1989). No award was given in the year 1982 and in 1985 the award was received by Pranab Das for Hakim Babu, the only other director to claim this award in National awards during the decade of 1980’s. Manmohan Mahapatra received it for the last time in the year 1992 for Vinya Samaya.

 

Mahapatra was born in the year 1951 in Orissa.  He studied film making at the FTII, Pune, and made first short film Anti-Memoirs in 1975. His debut movie as a director was Seeta Raati in 1981, which earned him the first National award for best regional film. Not only that, the movie was the first Oriya film to be screened at international film festival in 1982. Then Oriya film industry witnessed new wave movement with notable contributions of this great director. He has also directed a few short films and Hindi movies. Bits and Pieces is one such Bollywood movie.

 

Apart from film direction, he has also written the scripts of many movies and has produced a couple – Forbidden Dream and Neerab Jhada. He wrote the dialogues and script of his movie, Muhurta, set against the background of a remote village of Orissa.
