Manju Kapur Biography

Manju Kapur is an accomplished Indian writer who writes in English language. Her first published work - Difficult Daughters, won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for the year 1999. She is a lecturer of English at Delhi University. In 2011, her name was shortlisted for DSC Prize for South Asian Literature and the noted daily soap on Indian television - Ye Hai Mohabbatein, produced by Balaji telefilms was based on her book - Custody. Malayalam soap – Prayanam is also based on the same published book of Manju. The Immigrant, Home, A married woman, Custody, Difficult Daughters and Shaping the World: Women Writers on Themselves are her published works till now.

 

Manju’s distinct characteristics include – working on different novels at the same time, perhaps an unusual talent to achieve. It took 8 years for Manju to complete her first book, Difficult Daughters, won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for the year 1999, the award given to the best first book of an author across Europe and South Asia. She usually sketches her ideas which she later completes as writings. She is deeply influenced by feminist thinking and she declares herself to be a feminist. She believes – while describing the relationships between men and women, a feminist perspective is often inevitable.

 

She was born in Amritsar, Punjab. She completed graduation from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada in the year 1972. Later she took M. Phil from Delhi University. Her first novel got rejected by publishers eight times, though it won Commonwealth Writers' Prize in 1999. She re-wrote the novel and reduced and edited its contents, before it was finally published. She often documents for long years before starting to write something.
