Manjari Joshi Biography

Manjari Joshi is a popular News Reader of Doordarshan who has been associated with the field in the 1990s. She is married to the media person, Hemant Joshi, known as a journalist, writer, poet and a Professor of Mass Communication. The couple has together authored several books - Fundamentals of Journalism and Mass Communication, Communication for Development and Writing for Media. She is the daughter of famous writer, journalist and critic of Hindi in the 20th century - Raghuvir Sahay. She is also a translator for Russian to English and Hindi. Currently she is involved with training and teaching of Television journalism and has published several articles on newspapers.

She was born in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh as the eldest daughter of doyen of Hindi literature - Raghuvir Sahay. She completed graduation in Chemistry from Miranda House in Delhi University. Later she learnt Russian language, Literature and Civilization with specialization in Translation and Interpretation and started off her career as a conference Interpreter. She has also worked with NTPC and often wrote articles for newspapers.

It was a golden era of Indian television when Doordarshan was the only channel available. In those days, news readers were the real stars whom housewives and retired elders admit and imitate most.  Tejeshwar Singh, Salma Sultan, Neethi Ravindran, JB Raman, Shammi Narang, Manjari Joshi, Rini Khanna, Komal GB Singh, Usha Albuquerque, Ramu Damodaran, Sunit Tandon, Gitanjali Aiyar or Minu Talwar – the most recognized faces of India; they ruled Doordarshan channels in the 1980s and 1990s. Manjari Joshi was also one among those familiar faces. In those days in Spoken English classes, students would be instructed to listen to English news.
