Mangal Das Pakvasa Biography

Mangal Das Pakvasa was a social worker, politician and freedom fighter who lived in the 20th century. He was one among the first five Indian Governors. He served as the governor of Madhya Pradesh, Bombay and Mysore. He also served as the first President of the Bharat Scouts and Guides from 1953 to 1960. He remained a confidante of Mahatma Gandhi. Famous educationalist and social worker Poornima Pakvasa was his daughter-in-law. Famous classical dancer and Padma Vibhushan recipient Sonal Mansingh is his granddaughter. Sonal was earlier married to noted diplomat and IAS officer, Lalit Mansingh, and the couple is legally separated now.

 

Mangaldas M. Pakvasa was born in Mumbai on May 7, 1882. He graduated from the Bombay University in 1903. He was a recipient of Dhirajlal Mathuras scholarship. In 1904 he completed his Law studies winning Arnold scholarship in Hindu Law. He was associated with freedom struggle movement since then, and also took part in Civil Disobedience movement, for which he was imprisoned.  A leading member of the All India Village Industries Association, he also served as its honorary legal adviser. He had a great passion to rural handicrafts, and displayed his chamber with many of such pieces. He also promoted and helped the selling of such village products without taking any commission.

 

After Indian independence he was active in his social and political career. He represented Broach Panel Mahal and Surat General Rural Constituency in the Bombay Legislative Council. He served as the governor of three Indian states - Madhya Pradesh, Bombay and Mysore after Indian independence.  He is also known for his active involvement in Boy Scouts Movement, once initiated by British in India. He passed away on November 6, 1968.
