Mandakini Biography

Mandakini is a Bollywood actress of 80’s, most known for the scenes pictured in Raj Kapoor’s hit movie – Ram teri Ganga maili.  She was only 16 when she was casted opposite Rajiv Kapoor (son of Raj Kapoor) in this film. It earned Mandakini a Filmfare nomination for Best Actress as well. However critics claimed that the nude scenes pictured on her were vulgar and exploitative. Yet it’s for those scenes Mandakini is remembered always.  She was also linked with gangster Dawood Ibrahim. However she denied those rumours stating that they both are on friendly terms only. It’s rumoured that sequel of ‘Once upon a time in Mumbai’ is loosely based on the relationship between Mandakini and Dawood Ibrahim.

She has been successfully paired with Mithun Chakraborty in numerous movies of which Dance dance is most popular. Her pyar karke dekho opposite Govinda was also successful. However she was not able to re-create the magic she has done on screen with her debut movie - Ram teri Ganga maili.  After a series of movies, she quit industry in 1996 with Zordaar being the last movie.  Mandakini is married to a former Buddhist monk, Dr. Kagyur T. Rinpoche Thakur, who is popularly known as Murphy baby. Now she runs classes in Tibetan yoga and is a follower of the Dalai Lama. News has been confirmed that she will be directing an English movie along with her husband.

She is remembered for a few nice songs pictured on her. Sun sahiba sun of Ram tere ganga maili sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Roz roz aakhom tale of Jeeva sung by Asha Bhosle and Amit Kumar need special mention. It was one of the earliest movies of Sanjay Dutt. A few of her Bollywood movies include - Mera Saathi, aar paar, Aag Aur Shola, Mazloom, Jaal, Pyaar Mohabbat, Jeete hain shaan se, Hum To Chale Pardes, Jung baaz, Aakri baazi, Desh Ke Dushman, Naya khoon, Dushman, Pyar Ke Naam Qurbaan, Taqdeer Ka Tamasha, Deshwasi, Om, Jeeva, Loha, Hawalat and Param Dharam. But unfortunately, except one or two, all these movies were flops!
