Manavalan Joseph Biography

Manavalan Joseph was a noted character artist of Malayalam cinema during 1950s and 1960s. His first film was Neelakuyyil in 1954 where he portrayed the memorable character role of shop owner Naanu Nair. Since then he has acted in hundreds of character roles where he donned in humorous ones. To play character roles onscreen with a humour touch – he had a distinct talent. In 1986 January he was found dead in a lonely room of a hotel near Kodambakkam. ‘Vaartha’ of I. V. Sasi was his last film, and he had three scenes left before death took him away. He died of heart attack while he was staying for the dubbing of the movie ‘Vaartha’. He spent 29 long years in Malayalam film industry with more than 200 films in his account.

 

He was a native of Pattanam, Fort Kochi. He was associated with theatre before his film debut. In one of his plays he played the role of a Manavalan (Groom) and ‘Manavalan’ tag got permanently added to his name. Later the same name was used for a character of a groom in ‘Raarichan Enna Pauran’. Since his debut as a canteen owner in Neelakuyil, the world of cinema fascinated him most. As a stage actor, he was associated with Kala Kendra and Kala Nilayam. Though associated with cinema as a cine artist, its earnings were not enough to financially support his family.

 

He appeared in over 200 films, mostly belonging to comedy genre. Manavalan Joseph has left his mark as a comedian in many of I. V. Sasi and Jessy movies. Unaroo and Ee Naadu need special mention. He has also played the role of landlord in movies of Malabar folklore and he handled Christian characters most.
