Manas Chaudhuri Biography

Manas Chaudhuri is an Indian journalist and politician from Shillong, Meghalaya who got elected to state legislative assembly twice as an independent candidate. However he lost 2018 Meghalaya state assembly elections to BJP candidate Sanbor Shullai. He contested as an INC candidate this time. He has also served as a cabinet minister earlier. As a journalist he owns an illustrious career in the media world. He was the editor of ‘Shillong Times’ from 1978 to 2008 serving three long decades. For his contributions towards the field of Indian journalism, government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 2005.

 

Manas Chaudhuri hails from Shillong, Meghalaya. He was born as the son of Parsva Nath Chaudhuri. After his higher studies, he started his career in the field of journalism and has worked with different media houses over many years. He wrote many columns and also served as an editor during his long career as journalist. Chaudhuri is the founding President of the Shillong Press Club and Past President of Meghalaya Editors' & Publishers' Association. He served as the chief editor of ‘Shillong Times’, Meghalaya’s leading English daily for long 30 years. He was succeeded by Patricia Mukhim.

 

He has earned respect in the field of journalism in the Northeast in general and Meghalaya in particular, and widely regarded as one among the best among journalists of north-east states in the post-independent era. He has also served as an administrator/president of different educational institutions and governing bodies such as Lady Keane Girls' Higher Secondary School, Rilbong Sports & Cultural Club and formerly served as the honorary Secretary of the Rilbong PN Chaudhuri Secondary School for 4 decades.
