Malgudi Subha Biography

Malgudi Subha is a south Indian playback singer with a distinct voice. She has completed more than 3000 films songs spending 2 decades in the film industry. Usha Uthup is her role model. She is a great fan of Kishore Kumar too. Apart from all south Indian languages, she has recorded a few songs in Hindi also. National award winning south Indian film actress Priyamani is her niece. Subha most recently appeared as celebrity judge of music shows like Idea Star Singer, Super singer Junior 2 and Star Singer 2 (Kannada).

 

Till the age of 13, her family was at Mumbai. Then they got shifted to Delhi. Her family noticed her talent and took her to Komal G. B. Singh’s studio where she started with jingles for Rahman. She made her debut as a playback singer through the Tamil film Nadodi Thendral, music composed by Ilayaraja. When A. R. Rahman released his debut album, Set Me Free, he gave her opportunity to sing all its songs. Her career break was also provided with Rahman, when she started doing jingles as a vocalist, for this composer in the early 1990’s. Rahman’s debut album, Set me free, also known as Shubhaa Set Me Free went unnoticed when it was released first. It was only the early days of Rahman when he was not so popular. But when the same album was re-released in 1996 with Magnasound, it became success and Subha’s voice was also noticed.   

 

Her first Telugu successful album, Chikpak Chikbhum done in association with Rahman was also a hit selling 1 million copies. Apart from film and private album songs, she also sings devotional songs which are very popular. Her songs are included in movies like Dum dum dum, Thennavan, Uncle Bun, Yodha (Telugu), Thenmavin Kombath, Thaali Kaatha Kaliamman and many more.
