Malaysia Vasudevan Biography

Malaysia Vasudevan was a playback singer and actor of Tamil movies. But he was of Kerala origin. His parents were from Palakkad. They went to Malaysia in search of livelihood and got married later. They were attached with Tamilians most and later Vasudevan too studied Tamil rather than Malayalam.  As a successful playback singer, he has been awarded Kalaimamani by the Tamil Nadu Government and has won Tamil nadu state awards for best playback singer. Malaysia Vasudevan has sung close to 8000 songs in his three decades of active career out of which most are for Ilaiyaraaja. Many songs of Vasudevan-Ilaiyaraaja combination are classics and this great composer has wisely used Vasudevan’s voice to sing every type of songs.

 

Malaysia Vasudevan's first major song was a comedy song from the film Delhi to Madras "Paalu Vikkira Padma Un Paalu Romba Suthhama?" for the music director V. Kumar. After that he joined Ilaiyaraaja and his brothers’ team. But the big break was "Kaalam Seyyum Vilaiyattu" in Kumasthavin Magal, composed by Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan. Vasudevan’s name was changed to Malaysia Vasudevan, with this movie - by A. P. Nagarajan. After that he sung the title track of Annakili and "Aattukutti Muttai Ittu" from 16 Vayathinile in Ilaiyaraaja’s composition. After that he didn’t look back.

 

His big hits were born in Ilaiyaraaja’s compositions. A few of such timeless songs include - Indha Minminikku of Sigappu Rojakkal, Vaan Megangalay of Pudhiya Varpugal, Malargale Nadha Swarangal of Kizhake Pogum Rayil, Malargalilay Aaraadhanai of Karumbu Vil, Kodai Kaala Kaatray of Panneer Pushpangal, Poove Ilaya Poove of Kozhi Koovuthu and Thangachangili Minnum Painkili of Thooral Ninnu Pochchu. He has delivered numerous hits with M. S. Viswanathan also. Apart from the songs of Billa, the best songs of this combination are - Ezhudhugiral Oru Pudhukkavithai of Saranaalayam and Enniyirundhadhu Eadera of Andha ezhu Naatkal.

 

He has been successful with new generation music directors also. He has delivered a few hits with Rahman – Hoo lalala of Minsara Kanavu (for which Chitra won national award), Monalisa Monalisa of Mr. Romeo and Then Kizhakku of Kizhakku Cheemayile are a few such instances. He has also associated with Rahman for his first private album – Disco disco in 1987. He has also acted in about 85 movies.
