Makkal Pavalar Inkulab Biography

Makkal Pavalar Inkulab was a rationalist Tamil poet, playwright and activist who was inclined towards Communist party ideologies. This Muslim poet has given some significant contributions to social reforms in the modern times. Best known by the pseudonym Inkulab, he was a known follower of Periyar. He was also a college professor. ‘Avvai’ is his famous literary work. This work is regarded as the first modern Tamil drama, and has become a part of college curriculum. He passed away on 1 December 2016 at Urappakkam.

Makkal Pavalar Inkulab was born in the year 1944. His birth name is Shahul Hameed. He hailed from Keezhakarai in Ramanathapuram district. He completed his graduation and Master’s degree in Tamil literature. After studies, he started his career as a lecturer at college. He retired as a professor of Tamil at The New College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

‘Avvai’ is a revolutionary work authored by this modern writer. This play breaks all the previous concepts about this devotional singer. The writer describes Avvai to be young, sensuous, creative, 'free' person and a wandering bard, thus breaking all stereotypes. When the statue of Kannaki was removed by All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in 2012, he expressed his displeasure. This work challenged the patriarchal view which has marginalised the female voice.

Throughout his lifetime, he never accepted any awards. He was selected posthumously for the Sahitya Akademi award for 2017. But his family declined the award stating that he did not write expecting awards and felicitations. He is the author of the most popular Dalit song Naanga Manushangada, which is still played or recited at dalit gatherings in the state.
