Maitreyi Pushpa Biography

Maitreyi Pushpa is a noted fiction writer of Hindi literature. She has published ten novels and seven short story collections till now. Chak, Alma Kabutari, Jhoola Nat and an autobiographical novel Kasturi Kundal Base are her most appreciated works. She is a regular columnist of weekly Rashtriya Sahara. She is one among the rare women writers of Hindi who preferred to write on rural life of Indian villages and known for her powerful idiomatic language and uninhibited treatment.

She has received numerous honours throughout her literal career including Sahitya Kriti Samman by Hindi Academy, SAARC Literary Award, Vanmaali Samman, Mangala Prasad Paritoshak, Sarojini Naidu Puruskar, Premchand Samman, Nanjanaguddu Tirumalamba Award, Sudha Smriti Samman and Kathakram Samman. She won Premchand Samman successively for two years for Idannammam [1996] and "Betava behti rahi" [1995]. Her short story "Faisla" [1993] earned her Katha Puruskar. Idannammam [1996] won Vir Singh Ju Dev Puruskar and Nanjanaguddu Tirumalamba Award.

Maitreyi Pushpa was born in Sikurra village of Aligarh on 30 November 1944. Her childhood and teens were spent at Khilli village. Thus she inherited both the cultures and languages of Bundeli and Brij and they were powerfully transformed to her works as well. She completed post-graduation in Hindi from Bundelkhand College of Jhansi.

Her short story collections are Fighter ki Diary, Samagr kahaniyan ab tak, 10 Pratinidhi Kahaniyan,    Peyaari ka sapna, Chinhaar, Goma hansti hai and Lalmaniyaan. Gudiya bheetar gudiya and Kasturi Kundal base belong to her autobiography works. Her noted novels include - Gunaah Begunaah, Kahi Isuri Phaag, Triya hath, Betavaa behti rahi, Idannammam, Chaak, Jhoola Nut, Alma Kabootri, Vision and    Aganpaakhi. Mandakranta is her drama work. She has also written some women discourses.
