Mahua Moitra Biography

Mahua Moitra is an Indian politician from the state of West Bengal, affiliated to     All India Trinamool Congress. She currently serves as a parliamentarian in the 17th Lok Sabha headed by Narendra Modi. She has formerly served as the Member of West Bengal Legislative Assembly during 2016 – 23 May 2019. She resigned her MLA post to contest at general elections held in May 2019. She formerly served as the general secretary and national spokesperson of the AITC and was an investment banker before joining politics.

 

Mahua Moitra was born on 5 May 1975 in Kolkata, Bengal. She studied economics and mathematics from Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley in Massachusetts, US. After studies Moitra worked as an investment banker for JPMorgan Chase in New York City and London. She was serving as the vice-president at JPMorgan Chase in London when she decided to call it quit, and later she entered politics. She got into active politics in 2009 and has completed one decade here. Initially associated with regional politics, now she has moved to national level politics.

 

She hails from a Bengali Hindu Brahmin family. She was formerly married to Danish financier Lars Brorson and was settled in Denmark before she moved back. Mahua Moitra has also been a part of several controversies. She was accused of plagiarism, a claim that has been refuted by the author himself. She was once accused of assaulting a female constable of Assam Police at Silchar airport. She filed a police complaint against MP and Union Minister Babul Supriyo for allegedly "insulting her modesty" during a national television debate. For taking Babul’s name in Rose Valley ponzi firm scam, he sent legal notices to Moitra as well.
