Mahesh Manjerakar Biography

Mahesh Manjerakar is a theatre artist, film actor, script writer, producer and director. He is the owner of Ashwami Films. He appears in comic, negative as well as character roles in Hindi cinema. He has directed critically acclaimed Hindi movies like Vaastav: The Reality (1999), Astitva (2000) and Viruddh... Family Comes First (2005). As an actor, he debut with Kaante in 2002 for which he won IIFA awards for best comedian. His Marati film, Aai which accumulated numerous awards also needs special mention.

 

Mahesh Manjerakar entered Film industry during 1990’s. He has been active in theatre since early 1980’s. In 1984, his first theatre work was staged – Aflatoon. Later he directed many plays which won him numerous awards and appreciation. Dhyanimani, Doctor Tumhisuddha, Gidhade, Akashmaat, All the Best and Asecha Amhi Sare are a few among his noted theatre works. His debut work as a film director was Vastav, released in 1999. This movie accumulated critics’ appreciation as well as numerous awards. Vastav is widely regarded as the best work of actor Sanjay Dutt. In 2002, he gave another great movie to Sanjay – Pitah. Kurukshetra released in 2000 was another project with Sanjay Dutt, which became moderate successful at box office.

 

Later he released numerous movies which received mixed response from audience. Tere mera saat rahein, Jis des mein Ganga rahta hai, City Of Gold, Hathyar, Nidaan, Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi!, Pyaar Kiya Nahin Jaatha, Ehsaas: A feeling and Rakht were among his flop movies’ list. He directed ‘It Was Raining That Night’ in English and Bengali, remake of 2002 movie, Tumko na bhool paayenge. He has appeared in character roles in movies like Kaante, Meerabai Not Out, Padmashree Laloo Prasad Yadav, Pran Jaye Par Shaan Na Jaye, Musafir, Zinda, OMG: Oh My God!, Slumdog Millionaire, Jawani diwani, Run, Plan,  Wanted, debaangg, Himmatwala and Shootout at Wadala. In 2002, his Marathi movie Shala received National award for best regional movie in Marathi.
