Maheish Girri Biography

Maheish Girri is a politician and parliamentarian belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party. He got elected to Lok sabha from East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency in 2014. A leading politician from Delhi, he is also known as a social activist. He is also associated with Art of Living, where he serves as faculty. He has formerly served as International Director of the Art of Living Foundation. In 2016 he came to limelight when the student activist Kanhaiya Kumar of JNU University was arrested following complaints of this BJP leader. Kanhaiya was accused the charges of raising anti-India slogans in a student rally, in connection to the hanging of Mohammed Afzal Guru, a Kashmiri separatist.

 

Giri was born in Nashik on 8 February 1974. His childhood and teens were spent in his hometown. During his late teens he was drawn towards spirituality and left his home at the age of 17 in 1991. In 1991, he became head of an Ashram at Junagarh, and later he got opportunity to meet Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. Since then he is associated with Ravi Shankar’s Art of Living as a faculty. In 2010, as a part of his job he started a campaign to clean the holy river Yamuna and it was called Meri Delhi, Meri Yamuna.

 

One year earlier he was also associated with “Corruption Free India” Movement. The movement was named – Mantranaad. Though closely associated with Arvind Kejriwal for ‘India Against Corruption’ movement, due to indifferences he quit the movement to join BJP and subsequently got elected to Narendra Modi’s team. He successfully contested against Congress' three-time MP Sandeep Dikshit and Aam Aadmi Party's Rajmohan Gandhi. As a social activist he is the founder of NGO Navbharat Sewa Samiti and has been associated with many activities for social causes.
