Mahasweta Ray is a veteran actress belonging to Odia cinema as well as Bengali cinema, known for playing lead roles. She joined Bharatiya Janata Party most recently in 2018. Many of her performances are critically acclaimed, and have given her numerous awards and honours. She has also done one Telugu film opposite Megastar Chiranjeevi. She is associated with film industry since 1975, and has completed 4 decades in the industry. She is now busy with character roles on big as well as small screen. In 2017, she won state award for best supporting actress for the movie, ‘Dele Dhara Katha Sare’. Her role in Sambalpuri language film ‘Chini’, released the same year was also well received.

Mahasweta Ray hails from Puri, Odisha. She was born on born 2 July 1962. Her name is also spelled "Mahashweta Roy". Her father Rajkishore Ray was a lecturer and a renowned writer. Her childhood and younger days were spent in her hometown Puri, where she completed her schooling and higher studies. She started her film journey in the second half of 1970s, and some of her early releases include Jhumuka (1975), Hira Moti Manika & Sesa Shrabana (1976), Ae Nuhen Kahani (1977), Priyatama, Sankha Mahuri, Sati Ansuya & Pranam Kharedhu (1978) etc.

She was first spotted by director Sisir Mishra, who casted her in a group dance for a 1975-film. She made her debut with ‘Sesha Shrabana’ in 1976 and acted in over 100 films. She has won state film awards for best actress for several times. Throughout the years, she has portrayed different shades of characters, for both their variety and perfection. She has donned as a village belle as well as city girl, and also numerous character roles in the recent times.
