Madhushree Biography

Madhushree is an Indian female playback singer whose voice resembles leading singer, Alka Yagnik a lot. She has delivered numerous hits for A.R.Rehman compositions in both Tamil and Hindi. Among her Hindi songs of A.R.Rehman songs, Kabhi neem neem kabhi shahad shahad of Yuva, Baazi laga of Guru, In lamhom ki daaman mein paakezha si rishta of Jodha Akbar, Ey Sakhi of Raanjhanaa, Sharminta hoon of Ek diwana tha, Na shikwa hota of Tehzeeb, Pal bhar hai pyari of Swadesh, Tu bin bataye of Rang de basanthi, Hum rahe na rahe of Kisna and Naina Milake of Saathiya are her major hits. She has sung the Tamil version of Sawariya of Swades and Kahi neem of Yuva too. Songs are Kaavariya Kaavariya and Sandai Kozhi respectively. In fact she has sung maximum songs for A.R.Rehman, both in Tamil and Hindi versions. Her other major Hindi hits include Sau sanam paalenge hum of What’s your raasi?, Tumhi aaj meine of Kuch na kaho, Jaana hai of Kasak, Tum mujhe bus of Aietbaar, Mahi ve of Kal ho na ho And Ek meetta marz of Welcome to Sajjanpur.

Similar to many Bengali contributors of Bollywood, Madhushree also belongs to Bengali family. She was born in Kolkata. She learnt the primary lessons of music from her parents, Amarendranath and Parbati Bhattacharya. Her first recorded song was ‘Piya’ of Dus. Though the song pictured on Raveena Tandon was a hit, the movie didn’t get released due to sudden death of the director Mukul Anand. It was through Kumar Sanu’s recommendation that she got her next opportunity to sing for movies. The movie was Arjun Rampal-Manisha Koirala starrer Moksha of 2001 and song was ‘Mohabbat zindagi hai’. The movie was a big failure at box office and her song went unnoticed.

She was re-discovered by A.R.Rehman and he used her voice to record the Tamil and Hindi version of the same song. Both the songs – Kabhi neem pictured on Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee and Sandai kozhi pictured on Madhavan and Meera were chartbusters. Very often her voice was mistaken to be Alka Yagnik, that became her best positive point and worst negative point too! Apart from Tamil and Hindi, she has sung for a few Kannada and Telugu movies too.
