Madhumita Bisht Biography

Madhumita Bisht is a former badminton player from West Bengal, widely regarded as one of the best female players of the country in the 1970s and 1980s. Nicknamed as The Iron Lady of Indian Badminton, she is an eight-time National singles champion. She also owns nine doubles wins and twelve mixed doubles during her professional career. In 1992, she reached 29th position in world ranking and also defeated Word No: 2, 2 Kusuma Sarwanta which is regarded as her most memorable performance. She received the Arjuna Award in 1982 and Padma Shri in 2006, for her contributions towards Indian sports, especially badminton. Currently she is retired from professional career, and serves as coach. She has also coached national team since 2014.

 

Madhumita Bisht was born in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal in the year 1964. She became the sub-junior badminton champion in the year 1977. Later she won the bronze medal in women’s badminton singles at 1982 Asian Games held in India. She was also a part of the Indian team, which won the bronze at 1998 Bangkok Asian Games. She was at her career peak in the early 1990s, when her world ranking reached 29th position in 1992. Same year she defeated the then world No. 2 Kusuma Sarwanta in the 2nd round of the Indonesian Open, which is regarded as her career best performance. She also won a triple Crown at the Toulouse Open and became the second best at the USSR open in Moscow in 1992.

 

She has been successful as in both single and double matches, and she represented India in badminton at 1992 Barcelona Olympics. She got married to a fellow badminton player Vikram Singh Bisht in 1983. A son was born to them 10 years later. She continued with her professional career even after marriage, and giving birth to a son.
