Madhu Trehan Biography

Madhu Trehan (maiden name Madhu Poorie) is an Indian journalist and the founding editor of the leading Indian news magazine India Today. She is the daughter of Vidya Vilas Purie who began the India Today Group in 1975. Her brother Aroon Purie served as its publisher while she served as its first editor. Aroon Purie later went on to become one of the top 50 influential figures of Indian media who currently serves as the publisher of India Today and the chief executive of the India Today Group. He also serves as the editor-in-chief of ‘India Today’ and Reader's Digest India and the managing director of TV Today and Thomson Press (India) Limited. Madhu Trehan is married to renowned cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgeon, Naresh Trehan. Noted Bollywood actress and star anchor, Koel Poorie is her niece.

 

Madhu studied journalistic photography from Harrow Technical College & School of Arts in London in 1968 and earned a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University in New York in 1971. After a short stint in journalist work abroad where she served as an editor for a weekly newspaper, India Abroad, she returned to India in 1975. When the India Today Magazine was launched in India, it was Emergency period going then. Her father was looking after Thomson Press till then, founded by him. She joined as its chief editor and after two years, she returned to New York after giving the full responsibility to her brother. Then she got settled with her family life.

 

She returned to India in 1986 where she started her new innings as a journalist. She produced and anchored Newstrack, India’s first video news magazine. This show earned her fame as an investigative journalist in India. In 2009, she published her first book, Tehelka as Metaphor: Prism Me a Lie, Tell Me a Truth. She launched Wah India, a website and print magazine in 2000 and regularly writes for leading dailies.
