Madhaviah Krishnan Biography

Madhaviah Krishnan was a pioneer of wildlife photography. He was also a writer and naturalist who lived in the 20th century. Krishnan was an ecological patriot who opposed the introduction of exotic trees. Along with poetry he used photography as another tool for expression. He has also written some philosophical quotes. Krishnan was awarded the Padma Shri by the Indian government in 1960. He also received many other honours including Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship in 1968. He lived during the period, 30 June 1912 – 18 February 1996.

 

Madhaviah Krishnan, also known as M. Krishnan was born on 30 June 1912 in Tirunelveli of present-day Tamil Nadu. He was the youngest of eight siblings. One of his brothers is married to the daughter of T. Vijayaraghavacharya, a civil servant and administrator. His father was a Tamil writer and reformer A. Madhaviah, who authored many realistic novels. His father later started a Tamil magazine called Panchamritam. After his death, young Krishnan was looked after by his eldest sister, Lakshmi. He lived in Mylapore. During his school days he developed an interest in literature, art and nature, and started observing wild animals. He took a keen interest in botany during his graduation years.

 

He started writing for local Tamil magazines and often draws caricatures for them. He was employed by Maharaja of Sandur near Bellary in Karnataka, and he took up various jobs. He was interested in wandering in the wilderness, observing nature, breeding pigeons etc. He later published several essays on wild life photography. From 1950 till his death on 18 February 1996, he wrote a bi-weekly column in The Statesman of Calcutta called 'Country Notebook'. It was done without any break for long 46 years.
