Madan Lal Khurana Biography

Madan Lal Khurana is an Indian politician associated with Bharatiya Janata Party. Former Chief Minister of Delhi from 1993 to 1996 he is one of the prominent figures of BJP. He is also a member of Rashtriya Swayansevak Sangh and has served as the Governor of Rajasthan in 2004. In 1991, he was one among the accuses in the hawala case, the other members being senior leaders including L. K. Advani, V. C. Shukla, P. Shiv Shankar, Sharad Yadav and Balram Jakhar. Later many were acquitted and CBI’s role was criticized.

He was born in 1936 in Lyallpur, Punjab, British India (now a part of Pakistan). S.D. Khurana and Laxmi Devi were his parents. Following partition, he along with family moved to Delhi. Madan was 12 years old then. They started living in a refugee colony Kirti Nagar in New Delhi. Later he completed his studies in Delhi, graduating from Kirori Mal College. He got associated with politics during his college days at Allahabad University, where he was studying post-graduation. Actively involved in students’ politics, he became general secretary of the Allahabad Students Union in 1959.

After PG, he joined PGDAV (evening) College as a teacher. It was during that period when, he along with Vijay Kumar Malhotra, Kedar Nath Sahani and Kanwar Lal Gupta founded Jan Sangh in Delhi, which got finally converted to Bharatiya Janata Party in 1980. He served as general secretary of Jan Sangh for a couple of years since 1965. When BJP faced a major setback in the general elections following Indira Gandhi’s assassination in 1984, he played a significant role in reviving the part at India’s capital. He also served as the Chief Minister of Delhi from 1993 until he resigned in 1996. Now he has retired from active politics.
