Madan Lal Dhingra Biography

Madan Lal Dhingra was an Indian freedom fighter, political activist and a revolutionary from Punjab. As an Indian revolutionary he is best known for killing Sir William Hutt Curzon Wyllie, a British official – one of the earliest Indian movements of this kind in the early 20th century, where the British man was killed in his motherland. He killed Wyllie while studying at England. But he was caught, tried and was sentenced to death. His executioner gave a long drop of eight feet, three inches at the execution, which was really cruel and inhuman. He was hanged at Pentonville Prison, London at the young age of only 25.

Dhingra belonged to Amritsar, Punjab. Later he joined Government College Lahore to pursue Master’s. He was thrown out of college for protesting imported cloth from England, a part of Swadeshi movement. Later he deeply studied literature, understood human problems and worked at a clerical post also. Though Dhingra attempted to organise a union, it became unsuccessful. After working in Mumbai for a short period, he moved to England for future studies, on advice of his elder brother. He joined Mechanical Engineering at University College, London.

During this time, he came into contact with political activists Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and Shyamji Krishna Varma. Dhingra received arms training from Savarkar. He also got membership in Abhinav Bharat Mandal and India House. The execution of revolutionaries like Khudiram Bose and Pandit Kanshi Ram boosted their activities in England a lot and the group decided to take revenge on British in their mother nation.

In an annual function day of Indian National Association, Sir Curzon Wyllie, political aide-de-camp to the Secretary of State for India attended the function. When he entered the hall with his wife, Dhingra shot him dead, though he was caught later. He was tried in Old Bailey and sentenced to death. He was hanged on 17 August 1909. He didn’t regret over his act and gave statement that he want to born in the same nation to sacrifice his life once again for a good cause.
