M. V. S. Haranatha Rao Biography

M. V. S. Haranatha Rao was a well-known film and stage writer associated with Telugu art and cinema. He wrote dialogues for more than 150 films, and bagged Nandi awards for Pratighatana, Anna, and Ammayi Kapuram. Marudhuri Raja, a well-known screenwriter, dialogue writer and film director associated with Telugu cinema, best known for his work in “Sisidri” and “Yajnam” is his younger brother. Raja too has written dialogues for over 200 movies and brothers worked together for many movies. Rao also worked as music composer for his plays.

 

Rao was born in Guntur of Andhra Pradesh and his education was done at Ongole. His father was a clerk and their mother was a musician. He has five siblings, including his younger brother Marudhuri Raja. He is married to Koteswari, a school teacher of Ongole and has three children. He was interested in theater arts since his child hood and started acting in plays since the age of 8. His father used to take him to watch mythological plays, which influenced young Haranatha a lot. Later he pursued a career in arts and cinema. T. Krishna was a friend during his college days, and they together worked for many stage plays.

 

Rakta Bali was the first play he wrote and staged. After frequently watching plays at Vijayawada, he researched and wrote one play, Jagannatha Ratha Chakralu which received positive response from many artists associated with drama and film field, and also received invitation from film field. Yet he was reluctant to go. His play Kanya Vara sulkam has won the best drama award of the Andhra Pradesh Cultural Affairs Department. Kshira Sagara Mathanam earned him Sahitya academy award. Later he joined film field and wrote dialogues for more than 150 films. He was a seasoned film actor too, and appeared in 30 films. He passed away in 2017.
