M. S. Valiathan Biography 
M. S. Valiathan is an Indian cardiac surgeon from Mavelikara, present-day Kerala. He has served as President of the Indian National Science Academy and National Research Professor of the Government of India before. For his outstanding contributions to the field of medicine, government of India honoured him with the second highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan in the year 2005. He has received from Fellowships of different technological & medical organizations such as the Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy, National Academy of Sciences, India, National Academy of Medical Sciences, Indian National Academy of Engineering etc, apart from several honorary degrees by different universities of India. He has also authored many books and published many research works.
He was born on 24 May 1934 in Mavelikara of Travancore in British India, now a part of Kerala state. Marthanda and Janaki Varma were his parents. His early education was completed at his hometown, followed by Thiruvananthapuram. He joined Thiruvananthapuram medical college in 1951 and completed the five year course. He was one among the first students of the medical college, belonging to first batch. He completed his advanced studies on surgery and medical research from Liverpool. He had a brief stint as a faculty once he returned back. However he moved USA to undergo further training in cardiac surgery. He worked a few years in US before he returned back.
Valiathan returned to India in 1972 and joined Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute, Thiruvananthapuram in 1974. He was associated with this organization for two decades till 1994, where he conducted numerous cardiac surgeries, as well as continued his research works. Dr.Valiathan became the Vice-Chancellor of the newly set up Manipal University.
