M. S. Shinde Biography

M. S. Shinde was a Bollywood film editor who was most active in the classic era of 1960s and 1970s. As a film editor, his major work is the iconic and mega blockbuster hit, Sholay released in 1975. Quite interestingly, despite the movie creating history at box office for its stunning performances and long run, the movie earned just 1 Filmfare award from 9 nominations, and it was won by none other than M. S. Shinde for best editing. The movie was declared the "Film of the Millennium" by BBC India in 1999, and always list among top 10 Indian films all-time, though it couldn’t make it big at award functions. Seeta Aur Geeta, Raaz (1967), Mere Sanam, Brahmachari, Shaan and Chamatkar are his other major works.

 

Madhav S Shinde was born in 1929 in Maharashtra. He started his career as an editor for Bollywood films in 1960s. Bewaqoof in 1960 produced and directed by I. S. Johar was his first film. Since then he has been associated with G.P. Sippy’s production house and worked with the director for many movies throughout 1960s and 1970s, including the landmark films, Sholay and Seeta Aur Geeta, both starring Hema Malini.

 

Some of his noted works in the 1960s include - Mere Sanam, Dillagi, Raaz, Ek Shrimaan Ek Shrimati, Bandhan etc. In the 1970s, Tum Haseen Main Jawan, Sholay, Preetam, Jheel Ke Us Paar, Ganga Ki Saugand, Trishna etc are among his major works. Abdullah, Saagar, Love and God, Shakti, Shaan, Alibaba Aur 40 Chor, Guru (1989), Bhrashtachar etc are some of his works later. Interestingly his last three works starred Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role – Chamatkar, Ram Jaane and Zamana Deewana. Zamaana Deewana in 1995 was his last release.

 

His wife Prafula Shinde passed away in 2006 of cancer. The couple had three daughters. During his last years, Shinde had financial crisis for his medical purposes, and was helped by "Maharashtra Navnirman Chitrapat Karmachari Sena" of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. He passed away in Mumbai in 2012.
