M. R. Srinivasan Biography

M. R. Srinivasan is an Indian nuclear scientist and mechanical engineer who hails from south India. Born in the city of Bangalore in 1930, his role in the development of India's nuclear power programme and the development of the PHWR earned him a lot of recognition in the field. For his outstanding contributions to the field of Science & Engineering, government of India honoured him with the second highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan in the year 2015, Padma Bhushan in 1990 and Padma Shri in 1984. Homi Bhabha Life Time Award of Indian Nuclear Society, Best Designer Award of the Institution of Engineers (India) and Homi Bhabha Gold Medal from the Indian Science Congress are other major honours received by him.

 

His full name is Malur Ramasamy Srinivasan. He was born on 5 January 1930 in Bangalore, British India. He was born as the third of 8 siblings to his parents. He completed his intermediate in science from Mysore. Physics was his favorite subject. When a new Engineering college was started M.Visvesvaraya, he joined the college specializing Mechanical Engineering. He also completed Master’s in engineering. For advanced studies he travelled to Canada, and took his Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1954 from McGill University, where he specialized in gas turbine technology.

 

Following his return, he joined the Department of Atomic Energy in 1955. He worked with Dr. Homi Bhabha on construction of India's first nuclear research reactor, Apsara. In 1974, Dr. Srinivasan was appointed Director, Power Projects Engineering Division, DAE. In 1984 he became Chairman, Nuclear Power Board, DAE. In 1987, he was appointed Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy. He is the founder chairman of Nuclear Power Corporation of India started in 1987. He was a senior advisor at the International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna from 1990 to 1992.
