M. Prabhakar Reddy Biography

M. Prabhakar Reddy was a famous actor associated with Telugu cinema. He was one of the top heroes of 1970s and early 1980s. One of the acclaimed artists of Telugu film industry, he appeared in 472 films over three decades. He also scripted a few movies like Karthika Deepam. He won the Nandi Award for Best Story Writer for Grihapravesam and Gandhi Puttina Desam. He won the Nandi Award for Best Actor in 1980 and 1981 for Yuvatharam Kadilindi and Palli Pilichindi respectively. He bagged Nandi award for best supporting actor for Chinna Kodalu in 1990. He is a recipient of 5 Nandi awards. Started with hero roles, he moved towards character roles in the last phase of his career.

 

He was born in Thungathurthi, Nalgonda in the princely state of Hyderabad on October 8, 1935. Lakshma Reddy and Kausalya were his parents. He did his primary education in Suryapet town. His intermediate studies and graduation was completed from Hyderabad city. He also completed his medical education from Osmania Medical College under Osmania University in 1960. Same year he marked his big screen debut with the film Chivaraku Migiledi, directed by Gutta Ramineedu. He played the parallel lead of a psychiatrist in his debut flick.

 

Since then he essayed 472 roles onscreen including lead and character roles, and he also moved to story and screen writing. He succeeded in this field as well.  He scripted 21 films, and most of them remained successful. Karthika Deepam, Grihapravesam and Gandhi Puttina Desam are the famous movies scripted by him. He was active in film scene till his death in 1997. He introduced actress Jayaprada to big screen, and it was Prabhakar Reddy who suggested this screen name to her.
