M. O. H. Farook Biography

M. O. H. Farook was a very influential politician from Pondicherry, who served as the Chief Minister of this Union Territory thrice and parliamentarian thrice. He was the youngest chief minister of any state of India, when he assumed power of Chief Minister of Pondicherry in 1967. But this term was short-lived as he resigned from power the following year. Later he served as CM of Pondicherry during 17 March 1969 – 3 January 1974 and 16 March 1985 – 19 January 1989, completing a term of 5 years both these occasions. He has also served as governor of Kerala and Jharkhand for brief period, and Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia in September 2004.

 

M. O. H. Farook’s full name is M. O. Hassan Farook Maricar. He was born on 6 September 1937 in Pondicherry during French rule. His active politics began in the 1950s. He was active as a student leader during his academic years and participated in liberation of Pondicherry movement. He assumed power as Chief Minister of Pondicherry on 9 April 1967 and remained in that position till 6 March 1968. He bounced back and returned to power exactly after one year and completed a term of 5 years. He became the chief minister for the third time in 1985. He was associated with Indian national Congress.

 

He got elected to Lok Sabha from Pondicherry for the first time in 1991, followed by 1996 and 1999. During his first term as a parliamentarian, he served as Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Tourism during June 1991 – December 1992 under Narasimha Rao’s ministry. Farook was appointed as Governor of Jharkhand in 2010, and Kerala the following year. He passed away in 2012.
