M. N. Vijayan Biography

M. N. Vijayan, popularly known as Vijayan Mash was an Indian writer, orator and academic. Vijayan has worked as the editor of the cultural weekly Deshabhimani owned by the Communist Party of India (Marxist). His published works include - Kavithayum Manashastravum, Sheersasanam, Kazhchappadu, Bhayavum Abhayavum, Samskaravum Swathanthriavum, Marubhumikal Pookkumbol, Vaakkum Manassum, Adhikaram- Anuragam- Athmarahasyangal, Chithayile Velicham, M. N. Vijayante Prabhashanangal, Noothana Lokangal, Fascisathinte Manashasthram, Fascism- Prathyaya Shasthram-Prayogam- Pradhirodham and Pradhirodhangal.

 

Vijayan was born in the Lokamaleshwaram of Thrissur. His schooling was done at Pathinettarayalam L.P. School and Kodungallur Boys High School. He took degree from Ernakulam Maharajas College, and Bachelor of Law from Government Law College, Ernakulam. Later he took MA in Malayalam literature from Madras University. He joined Madras New College as a teacher in 1952. Later he has worked in University College, Thiruvananthapuram and Brennen College, Thalassery in 1960 and retired from the service in the year 1985 after completing 25 years in Brennen College.

 

He has served as editor of Deshabhimani and later became President of Purogamana Kala Sahitya Sangham. He was removed as editor of Deshabhimani when leaders of Communist Party felt he did not adhere to the party line. It happened when he opposed foreign funding of political work. Later he served as the editor of controversial periodical Padom. Most of Vijayan's publications are compilations of his speeches. He is regarded as one of the most powerful orators of Malayalam all times. Psychology, Marxism and social science were his tools for writings as well as speeches. He has also written columns for Samakalina Malayalam, Janashakthi and Maruvakku. He has also served as the editor of Maruvakku. He was a pioneer of the use of psychological criticism in Malayalam Literature, and influenced contemporary Kerala culture.
