M. Krishnan Nair (writer) Biography

M. Krishnan Nair was a famous writer, columnist and critic associated with Malayalam language. He was also known as a famous orator. He was the recipient of the first Goenka award for Excellence in Literary journalism. His weekly column "Sahithya Vara Phalam" made him indeed popular and this column was continuously published for 36 years uninterrupted. M. Krishnan Nayarute Prabhandhangal, Kala sangalpangal, Adhunika Malayala Kavitha, Soundharyathinte sannidhanathil, Sahithyavaraphalam, Sarathkala Deepthi, Manoradhangalile yaathrakkar, Oru Shabdathil oru Ragam, Viswasundari viswarathi, Panineer Puvinte Parimalampole and Vayanakkara, ningal jeevichirikkunno?, Mohabangagal and Karutha shalabangal are his major contributions.   

 

He was born in Thiruvananthapuram on 3 March 1923. His father was V.K. Madhavan Pillai and mother, L. Sarada Amma. His education was done at old Travancore princely state of British India. After completing post-graduation in Malayalam, he served as lecturer at various colleges. He retired as the Head of Malayalam Department, Maharaja's College, Ernakulam. He also continued as a columnist for several journals, magazines and dailies. Among his columns, his weekly column "Sahithya Vara Phalam" published on several leading weekly magazines gave him enough fame and popularity. The column was continuously published over 36 years, which shows its popularity. The columns were later complied together as a book. He was named after great critic, Kesari Balakrishna Pillai following this column.

 

Through his weekly column "Sahithya Vara Phalam", he invited Malayalam readers to the world of literature from Latin America and Europe. Apart from being an orator, he contributed literal works for more than three decades. 'Adhunika Malayala Kavitha,' 'M. Krishna Nairude Prabhandangal,' and 'Prathibhayude Jwalagni' are among his noted published works. He retired from his professional career as a Professor and HOD of Malayalam Department, Maharaja's College in the year 1978. He passed away on 23 February 2006.
