M. G. Soman Biography

M. G. Soman was a veteran actor of Malayalam who played lead roles during 1970’s and early 1980’s. Later he moved to character roles. In the year 1978, he acted in 42 movies in lead role, which is still a record. He alone with Sukumaran and Jayan formed the magical trio post Nazeer-Sathyan period, during the second half of 1970’s and first half of 1980’s. Guruvayur Kesavan, Jeevikan Marannu Poya Sthree and Ente gramam are a few among his early noted movies of 1970’s. Many evergreen Malayalam songs have been pictured on him like Kalpantha kaalatholam and Innenikku pottu kuthan. Lelam released in 1997 was his last movie.

His full name is M.G.Somashekharan Nair. He was born in Thiruvalla in 1941 October 28 to K. N. Govinda Panicker and P. K. Bhavaniyamma. He was their only son. He was active in theater during college days and has also scripted one play Mantharikal Garjjikkunnu. Then he joined Indian air force and was popular as a stage actor during his service too. He left Air force in 1970 and joined a drama troupe. He was associated with Kollam Amateur group in those days. He received Best actor award for “Crime – 302” and “Maram”. “Ramarajyam” proved to be the turning point of his career. When this play was staged at Karthika Thirunal theatre at Thiruvananthapuram, Malayattoor Ramakrishnan and Sridhar Ilayidom happened to watch his performance and gave his first movie role.

His first movie Gayatri (1973) was written by Malayattoor Ramakrishnan for P. N. Menon where he played supporting roles. It took a few more years to get leading roles and by the end of the decade he became one of the most sought heroes of Malayalam industry. Itha Ivide Vare directed by I. V. Sasi was the real breakthrough movie of his career.
