M. C. Pant Biography

Mohan Chandra Pant, best known as M. C. Pant was an Indian radiation oncologist and administrator who served as founder vice chancellor of the H. N. B. Uttarakhand Medical Education University, Dehradun. During his life time he has held many administrative positions such as head of the Radiotherapy Department at the King George's Medical University and Director of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow. For his overall contributions towards the medical field especially radiotherapy, Government of India awarded him with Padma Shri in 2008. He was also a recipient of the very prestigious Dr. B. C. Roy Award. He died at a comparatively young age of 58 in 2015. He was survived by his wife Nirmala Pant, who serves as the director of Lucknow Cancer Institute.

 

Mohan Chandra Pant was born at Kunkoli village. His birth place now belongs to Uttarakhand, and forms a part of Ranikhet hill station. His early education was completed from his village, and later he graduated from Kumaon University in 1974. He completed his medical studies from King George's Medical University in 1979 and later began his medical practice. Initially he also worked as a faculty before he moved to Tokyo for advanced training in CT Scan in 1986.

 

After his return, he joined KGMU and established a CT Scan unit at the institute, the first one of this kind in India. He also took advanced training in Magnetic resonance imaging techniques and radiation oncology from other parts of the world. In 2007 he became the Director of the Department of Radiotherapy at KGMU, and served this position for next three years. He joined as the director of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow in 2010, and was associated with it till 2013. He served as the Dean and head of the Radiotherapy Department at the King George's Medical University at the time of his death, aged only 58.
