M. Bhaktavatsalam Biography

Minjur Bhaktavatsalam or Minjur Kanakasabhapathi Bhaktavatsalam, shortly called M. Bhaktavatsalam was a popular politician, freedom fighter and former chief minister of Madras state. He served as the Chief Minister of Madras state from 2 October 1963 to 6 March 1967. He was the last Congress chief minister of Tamil Nadu and led the party in Tamil Nadu throughout 1950’s. Bhaktavatsalam partially retired from politics in 1967 after the defeat of congress in 1967 elections. He was a great freedom fighter and was imprisoned during the Salt Satyagraha and the Quit India Movement. Noted social worker and recipient of Padma Bhushan, Sarojini Varadappan is his daughter.

 

He was born in Madras on 9 October 1897. He lost his father at the age of 5 and he was later brought up by his uncles. One among them was C. N. Muthuranga Mudaliar, who was an Indian independence activist who served as a member of the Central Legislative Assembly. After completing Bachelor of law from Madras Law College, Minjur Bhaktavatsalam started practice as a lawyer of the Madras High Court. He has been associated with freedom struggle movement since his college days at Law College and joined Indian National congress.

 

Bhaktavatsalam started the daily newspaper ‘India’ and operated it till 1933. He was injured and got arrested during Salt Satyagraha. He spent 6 months at prison. In the 1936 municipal body elections, he got elected as Deputy Mayor of Madras City Corporation. He contested in Madras Assembly elections the following year and was elected from Thiruvallur. He served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Local Self-Government in the Rajaji government and resigned the position on declaration of war by UK.

 

He got re-elected in 1946 Madras Assembly elections, where he served as the Minister of Public Works and Information in the O. P. Ramaswamy Reddiyar cabinet. But he could retain his seat in the next Assembly elections. In 1962, the Indian National Congress won the assembly elections and Bhaktavatsalam took office as the Chief Minister of Madras after the resignation of Kamaraj. After that no other politician from Congress has been able to form a government in Tamil Nadu. Thus Bhaktavatsalam is the last congress chief minister of the state.
