M. Appavu Biography

M. Appavu is a prominent political leader from Tamil Nadu. He has served as an MLA three times in state assembly. He got elected to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly for the first time in 1996 as a Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) candidate from Radhapuram, as an independent candidate in 2001 and as a DMK candidate in 2006. In the 2016 elections, Appavu contested the seat as a DMK candidate but lost by 49 votes to I. S. Inbadurai of AIADMK. His campaigning for farmers' rights has led him to file PIL papers on several occasions. He is associated with DMK and Indian National Congress.

Appavu hails from Labbai Kudiyiruppu, Radhapuram Taluk, Tirunelveli District. His father’s name is Muthu Velayuda Perumal. He started his journey in state politics as a member of Maanila Congress (Moopanar). He contested from his hometown, Radhapuram. He got successfully elected from same constituency two more terms, and was defeated in 2016 state assembly elections by I. S. Inbadurai of AIADMK by a very small majority of 49 votes. This unexpected result was quite shocking to everyone. He did not contest 2011 elections because his party had entered into an alliance with the INC.

Appavu has been described by The Hindu as a regional "heavyweight" of the Indian National Congress. He has remained in news for his campaigns for farmers’ rights. He stood for improved agricultural insurance scheme to ward against the effects of crop losses and also advocated impose of minimum price controls on agricultural produce in order to reduce the alleged incidence of farmer suicides. Appavu has also been associated with matters relating to water supplies, and in 2017 he won a favourable result at the Madras High Court against the Government of Tamil Nadu too. He has also invited many controversies in the recent times.
