M. A. Baby Biography

M. A. Baby is an Indian politician from Kerala and Member of Communist Party of India (Marxist). He has served as Education minister of Kerala and at present a Polit Bureau Member of Communist Party of India (Marxist). He served as the Minister of Education in the V. S. Achuthanandan Ministry (2006-'11). Elected to Rajya Sabha at the age of 32 and became one of the youngest members of Rajya Sabha. 

Baby was born on April 5, 1954 in Prakkulam, Kollam as the son of P. M. Alexander and Lilly Alexander. Baby entered in politics through Kerala Students Federation during his school days. His schooling was completed at NSS High School, Prakkulam. He pursued graduation in political science. During Emergency Period, he was in his college days active in communist movements and hence got arrested. So Baby could not write the final year examination and abandoned his studies. He was brutally tortured in jail when got arrested during Emergency. He has held positions of Student Federation of India, Democratic Youth Federation of India, and CPI (M) during his youth days. At the age of 32, he got elected to Rajya Sabha becoming one of the youngest members then.

When V. S. became chief minister of Kerala, Baby got the portfolio – education. As an education minister, he bought many reforms in the education section of Kerala. His most noteworthy reforms were aimed at making the teaching-learning process more balanced. It was Baby who introduced single window admission processing for higher secondary education, which brought professionalism and disciple in the admission system in the education of Kerala. He also installed grading system in high schools and brought transparency in the system with internal assessments and other allied evaluation methods.
